Cinco De Mayo
Written By: Naomi G.
On May 15, 1962 Benito Juarez and 2,000 of his Loyal Men victoriously fought against Napoleon III and his 6,000 troops. After the French lost nearly 500 of their men, they retreated with only less than 100 loses for the Mexican Army. Chicano Activists have raised awareness on this event over time, and it is now celebrated and interpreted as a Celebration of our Mexican Culture and Heritage.
With any good Celebration, Music is a must! So I asked a few people from the Industry that I highly Respect, a few questions on Cinco de Mayo from various parts of the US.

Naomi G.: What does Cinco de Mayo signify for you?
Jehuniko: Cinco de Mayo represents a victory over the French by the Mexican Army in the town of Puebla. It is also another example to the absolute resilience of the Mexican People and all Indigenous People.
Jehuniko: I guess you could say I celebrate every day. I celebrate by blasting Rage Against the Machine, and Slayer in the swankiest of neighborhoods out of my new whip, and more importantly by giving Thanks to Creator God.
Naomi G.: List 5 songs that you will more likely listen to at your Cinco de Mayo celebration.
Jehuniko: Cypress Hill “ Latin Lingo”, Rage Against The Machine “Bulls on Parade”, N.W.A. “Fuck The Police”, Slayer “Mandatory Suicide”, and Billy Ocean “Caribbean Queen”

Naomi G.: What does Cinco de Mayo signify for you?
Andy Yola: Celebration over a victory against the French.
Naomi G.: Do you celebrate Cinco de Mayo, and if so, how do
you celebrate?
Andy Yola: Couple times when I was younger we celebrated Cinco de Mayo, but when I got my first job at Taco Bell at the tender age of 19 and met people from Mexico. They explained to me by saying nobody celebrates that day in Mexico only people in America, and it’s not seen a s holiday or of much importance in Mexico. But to answer the question on how we celebrated, we’d buy cases of Corona Beer, and drink it in my back yard, cooking Fajitas during my early 20’s, looking for an excuse to turn up honestly.
